Speaker Rattle Woes

Watching a lot of movies lately, it’s winter here now, and started to notice a bit of a rattle coming from the buffet cabinet that has the TV sitting on it (Picture above is not our lounge!). The center speaker is sitting where the top middle draw used to be.

It finally got to a point when watching ‘The Fall Guy (2024)’ where we had to stop the film and start investigating.

Next day I found this ‘Test Your Audio System for Bass Rattles and Resonance’ video on ‘0n Dr. Lighthouse’ youtube channel and played that through my system (downloaded it and played it through Kodi running on the XBOX One) and found that at 120hz the wooden panel at the back was the cause. I quickly made up a few small, thin wood wedges and tapped them in to stop this. Problem solved.

I found the clip really helpful as it slowly ramps up through the frequencies, displaying on the TV what frequency it’s at. I holds each frequency for long enough to be able to have a good look around and it’s easy to just jog it back a bit to keep testing.
